Topic 1 proposal.
For my questioning a writing construct paper I would like to discus the topic of beginning a sentence with the word because. Growing up we were always taught that in was improper grammar to start a sentence with the word because, however last year my english teacher said that in certain circumstances you could start a sentence with because. I would like to explore those circumstances. As well as research through my peers what they know about the topic from past education. Also explore the reasons we were taught not to use because at the beginning of a sentence. In doing so I think I can combine the hunter and gather strategy that Kleine illustrates in his article, as well as use some of concepts from Kantz's article in knowing when to use information as fact, and how to form original ideas about a topic.
Allison, I have to admit that this is a construct I was not familiar with. I was taught in school how to include a because clause into a sentence at both the beginning and end of a sentence. I am familiar with the prohibition against using coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, so, for, and yet) at the beginning of a sentence. My worry is that you will not be able to find enough research material to base your argument on. You might want to include coordinating conjunctions if you cannot find enough. I would look in education journals dealing with primary schooling. The National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) might also have something in their journal. Good luck. Let me know if you need any help.
ReplyDeleteI have run in to trouble about my because construct, I think I will go ahead and include the coordinating conjunctions and see what I kind find on those. Thank you for the ideas, I will definitely look into those as well!
