Before you read:
Last year I took a comparative religion class, and we would have guest speakers come in to speak about the ins and outs of their particular religion. During the time we were learning about Islam we had a muslim come to speak to our class. At first I was skeptical about Islam because of the stereotypes that are labeled with it. After meeting the speaker, and hearing about the religion my mind was opened to new ideas, and helped break down those stereotypes.
Summary: Villanueva's essay "memoria is a friend of ours: on the discourses of color is about the discourse communities that different races, or ethnicity's form. He uses examples of poems written by people that come from these communities. He also talks about how the rhetoric is connected to these communities.
Synthesis: Villanueva can be synthesized with porter intertextuality and discourse community because this esay also talks about discourse community. It can be connected to Heilker and Yergeau because hat one connects rhetoric and the discourse community of autism together like the essay by Villanueva talks about how rhetoric connects to the minority discourse communities. Villanueva can connect to all the other authors that mention discourse community. and lastly Villanueva relates to language because he talks about the importance of passing the culture and language down to children and talking to elders about stories of the culture.

I liked this quote because it is always special to grandparents when they talk to their grandchildren and it would make it even more special for the child to call their grandfather abuelo. to continue the culture.
|
"Remember to call your grandpa abuelo. He'll like the sound of that, since none of my sister's kids have called him that."
|
From an academic standpoint the minority races seem to group themselves together. At school you tend to see the same cultural groups eat together at meals and hangout in the same clubs. this helps them form a stronger discourse community.

"Reading this I wish I knew more about my own heritage, anytime I ask my family where our ancestors came from."

AE: after googling the phrase it says the phrase meant to imply something like “improving oneself by one’s own efforts” I think that in order for a group to gain status in america they need to hold on to their own culture and heritage.
Thoughts: I didn't connect with this article very well, I thought it was slightly boring. and I just don't connect to writing thats in a different language. I thought it was harder to understand because i didn't connect to the reading. I do think that it is important for children to talk to their elders about their background because elders like talking about that sort of thing. and it also lets the kids be more aware of cultures.
